Alrighty … you have had the opportunity to get some impressive author, publishing and book marketing advice this past month from the Chicks at Sea. We've shared more than 6 hours of content-rich tips this past month. You know that we—Judith Briles, Joan Stewart,  Amy Collins and Georgia McCabe--understand every aspect of this confusing, chaotic business of book publishing. You can access all Webinars replays on www.PUblishingAtSea.com .It’s decision time. Yours.

If you're cruising with us Jan. 18-23 in the Caribbean, you have until Thursday, Oct. 31, to reserve a cabin and GUARANTEE our low, low price. If you're going, book your spot NOW or kick yourself later when you see a much higher price.

Why? … there are only 5 Balcony cabins left with two people per cabin. Your cost is $1200 per person. The Outside cabins are $1100 per person and only 10 remain. The price includes your spot in the cabin (remember, cabins are for two), all workshops and the laser coaching the Chicks at Sea will be doing throughout. It also includes your food, your port taxes and your gratuities/tips to ship personnel. It does not include your transportation to get to and from Tampa. Here's another reason you must act NOW: cruise lines require that all reservations be paid for within 90 days of the cruise. That means we'll be letting go of unpaid cabins on Nov. 1.

Why Deciding Right Now Can Save You a Boatload of Money Money

If you were to go to the Royal Caribbean website today, www.RCCL.com ,and find our cruise (Caribbean, January 18, Tampa port), you would be surprised-- nope, shocked--to discover that NO Balcony cabins are available unless it’s a suite and that the Outside Deluxe cabin, category G (which is what we have) is
going for $1188 per person PLUS taxes, PLUS gratuities. That means you'd pay between $1400 and $1500 per person.

Your cost for the cruise PLUS workshops PLUS workbook PLUS laser coaching PLUS taxes PLUS gratuities are from $1100 to $1200 per person … We know some people like to make all their own arrangements. You may have insider cruise contacts, a special discount, and love the thrill of the last-minute deal that might pop up. Or maybe you've won a cruise and will cash it in for Create the Ultimate Bestseller at Sea cruise directly with the cruise line.  Whatever the reason, you can register for just the training sessions for only $695 … but we need to know you're coming!

Claim your spot. There are 5 Balcony cabins—first come, first gets. The Outside Deluxe cabin has a very large window—plenty of light and very comfortable. Right now, your cost for a cabin is half of what it would be if you booked it through the Royal Caribbean online site.
We look forward to saying "Ahoy Mateys" in person on Jan. 18 when we:

  • Greet you in person
  • Dine with you 5 nights
  • Do laser coaching to guide you when creating your  brand and your book
  • Brainstorm your book with you
  • Share our cumulative array of knowledge about publishing, marketing, social media, publicity and
  • distribution

So, is Publishing at Sea with the five us a fantastic deal? You bet.  Get on board.  Register NOW … or by October 31st. Take advantage of the 6-month PayPal option we set up—all info is on the website.
www.PublishingAtSea.com  just go to the Registration tab.

Those of you who know me, you know that I “seed” my book drafts on cruises … water is my muse. I’m heading for Bermuda next week … a full re-write of one of my books is within my sailing sights!  Come learn how I do this next January … it will be book #32.Sign up now.  See you on board!

Amazon Delivers a Huge Treat with No Tricks with MatchBook Program

This is hot and it puts Indie Authors in the catbird seat …
Amazon came up with a program last month that pushes print books … the bonus is that your get the eBook at a deep discount.

Matchbook bundles the print book with the ebook.  The customer they get a deeply discounted or free Kindle version of the same book. It’s similar to what Amazon’s audiobook program.

Traditional publishers are doing something that sounds like, but isn’t.  Many are offering “enhanced hardcovers”—they bundle the more expensive hardcover books with an e-book, for a 25 percent greater charge. So, if you purchased a new hardcover release for $25, you could choose to pay an additional $6.25 to receive the e-book as well. If you purchase the much cheaper paperback, all you get is the paperback. Big deal—you can do better with a discount at Costco or Sam’s Club and get the ebook on a separate purchase.

With Amazon’s Matchbook program, if you purchase the book, you can have the e-book included, for any
price-point between $0 to $2.99, depending on what the standard price of the e-book is, and which discount level the author has selected. For instance, if the e-book normally costs $1.25, the bundled e-book would be free. But if the e-book normally costs $6.99, you’d be able to get it for $2.99, $1.99, $0.99 or free, depending on what price the author’s selected.

Here’s a bonus… you don’t have to be exclusive with Amazon in order to enroll in the Matchbook program. And for Indie Author who only creates ebooks, Amazon’s Matchbook program is the perfect incentive to get print versions of their books up and running. Hello POD for those who don’t want to run a full run.  Take advantage of this!

17 Gems for #Authors to Keep Them Afloat

17 gems, jewels about print, ebook publishing

If you want a crash course on #book #publishing, set aside some time this weekend to watch the replays of
four free webinars that will teach you way more than what most authors know about book marketing,
distribution, publicity, sales and many other topics related to publishing.

I’m one of the Chicks at Sea, five publishing experts who will be hosting “Create the Ultimate Bestseller at Sea,” a Caribbean cruise Jan. 18-23 for authors and publishers. We offered the free webinars to whet your
appetite for the cruise and demonstrate how much we know about our topic.

I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned in only four weeks from the other experts!

Publicity Hound Joan Stewart, book distributor Amy Collins, and social media and branding expert Georgia
McCabe presented along with me. Our tips apply to self-published authors as well as those who have big
publishers. We discussed print books and ebooks. We offered options for those who want to do some publishing tasks themselves, or outsource to the pros.

Below are 17 (count them!) excerpted  jewels and gems from each webinar below. Click on the title that
interests you and register to listen to the entire replay at your choice of times and dates. When you’re
done, think about what you can learn by spending five days with us, at sea, on a working vacation.

The 7 Deadly Sins Authors Commit in Book Publishing Today

  • Many authors make a fatal error and embrace the “Rush to Publish” syndrome. They sign up for expensive programs that promise shortcuts. The result is often sloppy books that look amateurish.
  • Your book cover must be done professionally. Too many self-published authors rely on “my cousin who really likes to draw” or “my neighbor who is a professional photographer” for this all-important task. Expect to spend at least $500 on a cover. We also tell you exactly how much you can expect to spend for other publishing services.
  • Authors whose books aren't selling six months after they've launched sometimes give up and abandon their marketing so they can start writing their second book. You must ALWAYS be marketing, even a year or two after your book has been published. In our four Webinars, we suggested many ways to pump new life into an old title.
  • You should know the target market for your book so well that you’d be able to write a page in your ideal reader’s journal. Too many authors write books for the masses or fail to identify exactly whom they are writing for.

Authors Beware: What You Must Know to Avoid Being Fleeced by the Publishing Predators

  • This phrase should set off your B.S. detector: “If you sign with us, a senior editor with our affiliate New York publisher will look at your book.” The scam artists say this. What they don’t tell you is that their “New York publisher” has a post office box in New York but the company is elsewhere.
  • Another B.S. phrase: “We can get you top media coverage.” No they can’t. When I worked as a newspaper editor, I couldn’t even promise my reporters that the stories I assigned them would be printed.
  • You do not need several thousand copies of your book printed. Any “publisher” who tells you this is lying.
  • Some of the predators call them themselves “publishers” but they’re really companies that will print your book for a hefty fee. We know editors who have been fleeced and whose books were so inferior that they literally fell apart because the spine was weak or the glue was cheap.

Your Toughest Questions About Book Publishing Answered Here
What information do many authors fail to include at their websites? The price of the book! And sometimes
even a link to where people can buy it.

Is starting a podcast worth an author’s trouble? Absolutely! A podcast can help you reach new audiences
that might not otherwise discover you. We give you tips galore on how to get started.

How does a self-published author know how to price a print book or an ebook? By doing research  and finding out the prices on your competitors’ books. We give you tips on how to search, and where.

“I heard Amazon is doing a huge sweep through its store and removing self-published ebooks about erotica, and even some about romance. Is this true?” Unfortunately, yes. So are other book sellers. Judith Briles tells you exactly what to do to avoid being part of the sweep.

How to Use 12 Book Publishing Trends to Sell More Books

  • Self-published authors, finally, are on equal footing with authors who have big New York publishers and have gained a new respect within the publishing industry. That’s because they’ve taken the time to learn about publishing. These four webinars will make you very smart, very quickly.
  • Hashtags are the new search tool. Learn how to use them when sharing information about your book.
  • Create a Google+ profile and get active on that site. Your involvement is part of what Google factors into its algorithm, the formula that determines where you show up in search results.
  • Libraries offer opportunities galore for authors to SELL more books. The number of library patrons is skyrocketing due mostly to the bad economy, and some patrons use libraries to find out about new authors before they invest in their books.
  • You no longer have to grovel at the feet of traditional media to ensure adequate publicity for your book. YOU are the media! I explain many ways you can create your own media outlets and promote your book far and wide.

If you like those tips, you’ll love all four webinars.  All are carried on the Home page at

Important Note: The deadline for signing up for the cruise is fast approaching. If you’re on the fence about whether to come, you can call me at 262-284-7451, or Judith Briles at 303-885-2207. All the details are on the PublishingatSea.com site.

You can spend 5 days at sea with 5 book experts, pick our brains, bounce ideas off of us, learn which vendors we recommend, know how much you can expect to spend to publish your book, and return with everything you need to lay the groundwork for a bestseller.

#Hashtags … Oh My … They Are Everywhere!

You can’t avoid them. They are on your TV. They are in press releases. They are used in radio discussions, ads, even billboards. Blogs are loaded with them, not to mention LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook and of course, bows to Twitter for goosing us all to start using them.

Why are hashtags so hot? It’s all about social media … that phrase that is now ingrained in our thoughts and tongues: search engines. Those little devils love hashtags as they are the cat’s meow for finding results.

Hashtags have been a key factor in growing our radio show, AuthorU Your Guide to Book Publishing  … or I should write: #AuthorU Your Guide to #Book #Publishing. After every show, six to ten Tweets are created around the contented, all using key phrases and words that will hook potential podcast listeners. Words/phrases like authors, books, publishing, marketing, promo, pr, book sales, book marketing, author platform, platforms, book platform, publicity, get published, indie publishing, self-publishing, writing, writers etc. Or, how they are used would be like this

 #authors, #books, #publishing, #marketing, #promo, #pr, #book sales, #bookmarketing, #authorplatform,
#platforms,#bookplatform, #publicity, #getpublished, #indiepublishing, #selfpublishing, #writing, #writers

For a recent show with Brian Jud that deep dived into target marketing and niche marketing, here’s a few of
the Tweets I created along with the link to the podcast:

#author alert: get the key steps to target your #book buyer-listen to podcast. http://ow.ly/pUTHu

#author tip-Why there is “no one size fits all” rule in special #book sales, except one-listen to podcast.

Notice that there is a variation for each Tweet, but they are all connected. For a Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn posting, I would add additional info since character space will allow it … yet the hashtag will
always be in play.

Many of the old ways of calling attention to your news along with links within your articles and blogs are
lessening is use.  The Hashtag has risen!  Use it. Don’t leave your postings, your Tweets, your anything that is in writing that goes out in cyberland without out it.

Authors and newbie authors are the latest targets for a variety of “publishing  services” and “book consultants." We call them the Publishing Predators because they have a far greater interest in your checkbook and credit card than in developing you as an author and helping you create a book you can be proud of, market and sell.

  •  The key phrases and marketing gimmicks that should set off your B.S. Detector
  • Key questions you should ask any book consultant.
  • Why you must avoid any publicist who promises you coverage in top-tier media
  • What you can expect to pay for reasonably priced publishing services…and when to know if you’re about to be fleeced.
  • What to do if you've been swindled…lots of unsuspecting authors come to us after it’s too late
You don’t want to miss this deep dive 60-minute Webinar with us–Book Shepherd Judith Briles,

Do You Want Book Reviews for Amazon and Goodreads?

It’s always fun to connect with many of our followers on Author U’s social media sites. Meet book reviewer and blogger Lu Ann
Worley of Lu Ann Workley Book Reviews …

Lu Ann has been officially reviewing books for over a year and a half, she recently opened her new review blog a few months ago.

Book Reviews for Awesome Authors

In exchange for a printed copy, she would love to read and review your book(s). However, she no longer accepts e-books in exchange for free book reviews. Mostly, she is ONLY compensated for her time with a printed or audio copy in exchange for an honest review.  She keeps the book in her personal library and allows family and close friends to borrow them with the agreement that they send in a review on the book as well OR donates them to a local library and encourages the patrons who are members of various Social medias (like Amazon) to give their own reviews. The library also has signs displayed asking them to do so in response of the author’s generous contribution.

Note: If the book to be reviewed is not the first in the series, Lu Ann prefers to have the ones preceding it as well. It usually helps in the reviewing process.

Children author tip: Children’s authors will be read more quickly because she wants to build that portion of her blog site … and if course, they take much less time. You are welcome to check out the reviews on her site. She also submits her reviews to Goodreads (under Lu & LAWonder10) or on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords, under LAWonder10. In addition, she lists on various Christian sites and is now a part of The Library Thing, as well.

eBooks: If you want an ebook review, you need to add $10

It’s a win-win-win for all.

7 Deadly Sins of Publishing … Redux!

If you’re writing a book, and you have only a few thousand dollars to spend publishing and marketing it, how should you spend your money?

Three things must be at the top of your list. If they aren't, you risk ending up with a book that looks amateurish, unprofessional and sloppy–with no chance whatsoever to become a bestseller.

Three book experts joined me on a Webinar Tuesday night to explain “The 7 Deadly Sins Authors Commit in Book Publishing Today.”

Collectively, we have worked with thousands of authors the last two decades, and we see these problems repeatedly. If you missed the Webinar, you can register to watch it, for free, at your choice of times and dates here:

You’ll learn the critical steps you can’t skip if you want your book to be a bestseller. If you’re already published, we’ll show you how to breathe new life into a book that isn't selling. After you register for the time and date most convenient for you, we’ll send you periodic reminders as your replay date draws closer so you don’t miss it.

P.S. One of the book experts explains the surprising fact you must know if you want to get your book into Costco, Sam’s Club and the other Big Box stores. Hint … that was me!

and, during the webinar, you can learn the juicy details about how you can join us for
our “Publishing at Sea” cruise January 18-23 in the Caribbean.
