What To Do Next for Your Next, Next Move After You Have Book In Hand?

... Speak About and Market It, Of Course!
Book Success

When the book deliver euphoria wears off, every author has the gaze in the belly button moment … what do I do next?
Two quick responses:
1     Market, Market, Market. Eighty percent of your time will now be directed to this single word.
2     Speak, Speak, Speak. You will enjoy the reprints, not to mention the book sales.

I am a firm believer that speaking is one of the best ways to move a book—when you connect with an audience, they want to take you home with them. Your book may be the best thing and the least expensive. They are impulse buys—meaning you need them onsite. You must take credit cards. My personal record was speaking at a conference in Utah for 60 minutes. In 5 hours, over $16,000 in book sales happened (560 books to audience of 800) ... one book at a time.

Knowing who your audience is; who your wisdom and advice can deliver the answers or relief of pain for and to; having a quality book—and I mean quality, not one of these 30 day faux products that look like it; and learning how to speak, which includes story telling can create an amazing vocation.

You need a good website … no, you need an EXCELLENT website … a MUST … the Home page needs to say upfront what your expertise level is—meeting planners will give it less than 10—that’s a quick TEN—seconds to grab their attention—bullet point your key points; get testimonials from planners and attendees that say you and your message rocks; make sure there are photos and videos of different locations/groups so that they can see that you can address multiple audiences. No matter how serious your topic, make sure there is a short clip or something that shows you have humor. People love to laugh.

Speak. Speak. Speak. Market. Market. Market.
Your website, with whatever your call to action is—something that is in the upper right side of your Home page; yes a Blog—continue the conversation with depth and create your own Forum; yes Facebook—your Fans are waiting for you; yes Twitter—Tweets and “hashtags” can rock your marketing and Internet presence; yes for Pinterest—especially is audience for a book that is created for women; yes a YouTube channel—become a video star; yes to Google plus—get to know the “hangout” feature; yes create a virtual blog tour; yes get the book on Amazon—don't bellyache about the discounting or the percent they take—it’s the same in bookstores; write articles; seek reviews ... and oh yes, get prepared to work your tush off.
Writing the book is a mere 10 percent of your time ... now the real work begins—I know, I'm working on book # 32.

Publishing Goliaths Scan the Horizon for What's Next

The giants in publishing continue to waltz —last time it was Penguin and Random House. The negotiations are on for what the surviving and new publishing company will look like including who will be exiting the building. The new company, Penguin Random House, boasts in excess of $4 billion in revenue and controls about 25 percent of the worldwide consumer book market. Who will be next?

There will be obvious changes: to save money … to make money. When  companies marry, any company that has a similarity such as Penguin and Random House, Noah’s Ark doesn't work. Picture this: Between the two, there were over 10,000 employees across the globe. Some, maybe plenty, are going to go—it’s the Noah’s Ark factor. Expect to see imprints disappear; with them, editors will get the pink slip. The multiple duplicate accounts—the warehousing, distribution, accounting, technology and operations in general … all will most likely come under a single operation when the huffing and puffing is all over.

Negotiating with the other giant, Amazon, will become interesting. Whether these two get into a pissing publishing match over just how much the discounts will be—it’s clear that it will have a dominoing effect within the entire industry. Right now, the pissing match has between Hachette and Amazon over ebook pricing.

And negotiating with authors—may get a bit of a shorter stick—if a deal is struck, the terms may not be as “kind” to the author if there had been other publishers vying for the book.
Not only is the author … the creator of the product that these two Goliaths sell … in for a squeeze, so is the literary agent. How so? Most likely, the number of agents will be further reduced—the remaining agents will be “thrilled” to get any type of deal that is offered by the reduced filed of editors acquiring books. For the biggies, it means fewer auctions for agents to create. In the end, less leads to less.
With the recent announcement that Wal-Mart will no longer offer to sell into Amazon’s Kindle market, the Goliaths will continue their battles. Where next will the speeding bullet land? Is it a bird? A plane? Oops ... it's a book!

Book Publishing and Editors Are Like Peanut Butter and Jelly

Why so many authors think that their friend who teaches literature at the local college, or their sister who loves everything they write and do is the perfect editor for their work is beyond me.

Your editor can make or break your work—she can shape and shore it up … or, put in some commas and check your spelling. There are now more self and independent published books than those produced by the traditional NY houses—and too, too many have minimal, if any, editing. Think “ruthless editing.” Cut and shape, hire a pro—and, when in doubt, cut it out.

If it's possible to delete a word

Look for an editor who "gets" your topic ... it will save you hours in their education. Let them know if there are quirky or unusual phrases or words in the beginning. If all the editor is doing is copy--the grammar and punctuation--he won't be thinking about what sub-heads and layout should be. Somewhere along the line, authors began to think that editors worked at minimum wage ... wrong. You will pay from $25 an hour and up--most are going to come in the $50 an hour range. The cleaner the copy you give them, the less you are going to spend.

Book Publishing ... 4 Factors to ID Your Path

Which book path is for you--traditional ... self ... independent--which? Four words can get you focused: timing, control, quality and money. All are key factors when it comes to publishing.

smart2

Timing—if your manuscript is completed, you can have it edited, cover and interiors designed, printed and in your hands within four months or less. With traditional publishing, you can have your manuscript completed and it will most likely be in your hands in 18 months.
TimeManagement2

Control—if you get a group of authors together who have traditionally published, one of the most common grumblings you will hear is that they don’t like the way their book looks—covers and interiors and they really have been in a fog when it comes to book sales.

Consider choices

Quality—just a few years ago, a close friend had her 5th book published by the same NY publisher that did my second book in the mid-eighties. Over 30 years between our respective publications. The book she proudly gave me was a month old and a trade paper. The interior paper was thinner than mine when we took it off my book shelf to compare; my trade paper cover was still flat—hers was already curling up. Hers, of course, was twice the price of mine.

Book Published

Money—is an important thing to look at. Most traditional publishers are pushing for “net” royalty deals. If your book is $20 retail, the net for sales to wholesalers and distributors will be less than $10 per book—meaning that the royalty is based on the less than $10 amount. The last two years have been brutal to the “average” author—non-fiction sales are in the 4,000-5,000 area. That means $4,000 to $5,000 in royalties—those lovelies that are paid twice a year, with a deferral of three months after each closing period; and usually with a hefty percentage hold back for reserves—meaning books get turned back and the publisher wants to cover its tush and not overpay you (and come knocking on your door to now pay them). In other words, this isn't going to seed your retirement—don’t quit the day job!

royalti-buku

As a savvy self and independent publisher—when you create a Author and Book Platform to reach out to your crowd, your sales will not only be greater, the financial reward will be significantly greater. For me, I know that I can sell 3,000 copies of a book and net $40,000 to $50,000 higher than my traditional publishing contracts that I used to live with.
It’s your choice … but do the math always. Measure your time, investment and potential return.

Book Awards … Should You or Shouldn't You?

Book award contests are everywhere. What do you do when you win a book award? The savvy author tells others about it. Don’t count on your publisher to do it if you are published by someone other than your own company. Get your computer open and:

1. Create the publicity to now support your book and drive up book sales. Write a media release that includes who awarded you, in what topic area. Make sure you include your book title (I've actually seen this forgotten), you as the author, publisher and where the book is available. For example, I live in Colorado—the top book store in Denver is the Tattered Cover—include that the book is available (and make sure it is). If you have a judge’s comment and appropriate, include it.

2. Tell the media world … it’s bragging time. Send the media release to your local newspapers, TV, radio or any organizations you belong to.

3. Think social media. Let your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn Fans know … add the link to Amazon’s page for your book. You can create a video and post on YouTube. When I hear about AuthorU members or Book Shepherding clients, it is immediately posted on our Facebook Fan pages and announce in The Resource eNewsletter.
Social-Media-Logos
4. Have a photo with you, your book, award … post it, post it, post it … on all social media sites. If appropriate, link to them as well.

5. Blog it … blog about it on your blog; and if there are other blogs you've been following or are appropriate to connect with …announce to their world as well.blog_logo6. Add that you are an Award-Winning Author to your signature line for all emails.

7. If you have multiple awards, consider putting the award images as an imprint on the back of your book--always there.

8. Don’t forget your website. Get it on the Home page—include a photo of you and your award and book

Add it to your Media page … if you don’t have one, create it—use the logo of the group that honored you … once you win one award, that seem to start multiplying. Add to the page as they come in.

Book Publishing Today ... Avoid Preying Publishing Predators

Reading ... cooking and eating ... movies ... some of my favorite things. A day/evening of cooking with a good movie--either at home or on TV sometimes becomes the catalyst for writing ideas. I was ready to love, love, love the book that had them all, and I didn't.

The Difference

First of all, I have to tell you . . . I did not like Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Eat, Pray, Love. Oh, there’s no question that the author is talented. It’s well written—about a married women who doesn't want to be married. She’s got to do a re-direct on her life to find herself, so she’s taking a year off and schmoozing, learning and speaking Italian plus eating in Italy, praying in India, and loving in Indonesia. And though I like Julia Roberts, I didn't go to the movie.
Did I mention she does love her husband, David—the one she doesn't want to be married to? What scares the hooey 20100309-obc-eat-pray-love-220x312out of her is having a baby—something that, in the early days of their relationship, they agreed they would do when the big 30 hit. Fast forward to now; it’s approaching and our author is a blabbering mess.
Here’s what I didn't like about the book and the author: she did not communicate to hubby that babies weren't her forte and that it wasn't going to work for her. Then the two could have come to closure instead of her dumping him for a new language, some pasta, and eventually meeting a guy who wasn't interested in increasing the population.

What’s this got to do with authoring and publishing besides the book itself?

 Everything. Let’s start with clear,
effective communicating, which is what many of the iUniverses, AuthorHouses and those who package publishing projects don’t do. My favorite thing about AuthorHouse is the coining of the word “authorcentric”—it’s a very cool word and one that I embrace. I wish AuthorHouse did. Then there’s iUniverse, which claims to be the champion of “supported self-publishing.” What’s supported self-publishing? It's a great term for a publishing predator to use!

Per iUniverse (via its website):

Self-publishing your book with the support of iUniverse is a professional, affordable, and fast way to get your book into print. Compared to publishing on your own, it costs you control of some aspects of the publishing process, but only in exchange for less hassle and expense. iUniverse professionals with book-publishing expertise will educate and guide you through the entire process for an affordable price.

Supported self-publishing also enables you to test your marketing abilities and learn about the publicity process without emptying your bank account or making it your full-time career. And, because you control the rights to your book, you can get started with supported self-publishing but move to a traditional publisher—or choose to self-publish on your own—after you have experience and a track record.

Let’s look at the folks at AuthorHouse via its website:

AuthorHouse has grown into the largest self-publishing company in the world – responsible for helping more than 40,000 authors publish more than 60,000 books. AuthorHouse allows you to maintain creative and financial control of your book while receiving all the personalized attention and support you need – from publishing to promotion and everything between. AND AuthorHouse has print-on-demand service that combines high-quality production with speed to market. Plus, formatting options and distribution capabilities can help set your book up for selling success.

Each boasts about its marketing services (very expensive), low cost entry into publishing for the author, generous payments (really?), distribution capability, etc., etc. AuthorHouse and iUniverse are just two of the many, many who proclaim themselves as “self-publishers” but who are, in reality, Vanity Presses.

Period—nothing more, nothing less. They are huge and have a literal boiler-room approach, just like a hounding credit collection agency would—dial and re-dial … “If you don’t respond by today at two, our special offer will no longer be available … blah, blah, blah.” They eat, prey (on writers), and probably just love themselves. Communicate clearly? … nope. It’s grey everywhere.

They all use a POD model—which I’m the first to admit has a spot where it’s the right method for a quick print or end of life. But for the serious author/publisher, the one who intends on making money with a pBook format, this is a pass.
Publishing predators eat, prey and pretend to "love" the author when what they love is the money and a fat credit card. Masters of deception, authors must beware. The self-published author is their favorite meal.
