Does Your Cover Need a Make Over Before It’s Even Printed? with KATHI DUNN

With a powerful cover, the author can become an undisputed bestselling author — not a fly-by-night 24-hour blast on Amazon. Most authors don’t get is that the book is a product and an intelligent professional cover design sells that product. Too many authors think it’s not a big deal, because:

  • they’re going to find a publisher (ha!);
  • they’re going to get it done at 99Designs (yikes); or
  • they’ll do it themselves (OMG).

So many of the “seasoned” authors are not succeeding because of weak covers—attendees won’t be after hearing multi-award winning cover designer Kathi Dunn.

Kathi Dunn and DUNN+ASSOCIATES designs stellar book covers and marketing materials for bestselling authors, traditional and indie publishers, and fast-track experts so they can build credibility, open new doors of opportunity, and create positive change in the world. Since 1985.

How Does Your Author or Writer Website Measure Up?

As an author, do you think of your website as a business card. Or, do you think of it as a portal?

Think. If you exchange business cards, do you envision it hitting the circular file–to be carried out in the next trash pickup? Or, do you see it lingering on a table, a desk, placed in a spot that the recipient easily remembers? Of course, you want the latter.

Shift to your website. Did you know that the average visitor to a website is gone within five seconds? FIVE SECONDS! That’s equivalent to be dumped into the circular file–trashed.

Over the weekend, members of Author U who attended the Author and Book Findabililty Brunch and Learn created a hive of activity and creativity. The section on website strategies was eye-opening, even to those who had very high scores via HubSpot’s Market Grader, a nifty tool that measures your website’s marketing influence. If you haven’t measured yours, I suggest you do: http://marketing.grader.com/

We all hear about SEO this and SEO that. Is it a big deal? And the answer is: yes it is. The information that
Findability pro Heather Lutze  revealed was absolutely what a roomful of authors in every stage of publishing wanted to hear. Hanging on to every word, no one wanted to leave–we wanted more!

Earlier this year, Heather created a stellar blog asking if your website was a ghost town. Read the blog, and then ask yourself, “Is mine?”

Your website isn't a throw-away. It is the portal for you and your work. Does it reflect your intent? Does it carry your brand? Does it have inviting content to keep a visitor, any visitor for over that three to five drop in
rate? Is it compelling enough to bring them back? Is it “old”? In other words, is it boring?

All of us need website makeovers at some time. All of us need to learn some of the tricks of the trade to keep the site, and self, visible.

  • When was the last time you really deep dived into website land?
  • When was the last time you looked at competitive websites and visually measured yours up to theirs?
  • When was the last time you did a keyword search for key words and phrases that are “hot” for your  field, your expertise?
  • When was the last time that you verified what tags were used for your website within the search engines–the ones that your website designer set up?

Time’s up… start with key words pronto. Head over to HubSpot and check your website out. Then, register for the Author U Extravaganza. You will discover the latest in what works and what doesn't.

No More Wannabe … Become An Author and Publish!

Moving from Wannabe Author to the Real Thing It never fails … at every conference I speak sat, multiple attendees will say, “I can’t believe you've written all these books … I wish I could write a book.” And she always responds, “Why not … you can.”

Moving from Wannabe Author to the Real Thing It never fails … at every conference I speak at, multiple attendees will say, “I can’t believe you've written all these books … I wish I could write a book.” And she always responds, “Why not … you can.” Is there

a book in you? Most people think there is. And most don’t get them out. You could have the makings of a fantastic novel, a creative young adult series, and exquisitely illustrated young children’s stories. Sci-fi could be your genre, a cookbook, romance, intrigue, how-to or business book may be lurking in your creative closet. You just may be able to take your career to a whole new level with the creation of a book. Adding to your professional credentials, if done right, could position you as the expert in a specific field. A book could talk you to a whole new level, a different type of professional business card. Many wannabe authors practice the art of one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, three to get ready, three to get
ready … and they never go. They keep reaching for one more thing; one more piece of information; another interview; another who knows what. Sometimes, it’s just another excuse. Their book never gets written, much less published. Their quest for the perfect book has become the enemy of creating a good book,
even a great book. Here are five key steps to you and your book success:

1   The First Step  Choose a spot … any spot that is yours and yours alone. Authors need their space and time. Space will contain all the ingredients you need to support you. Think computer, phone— if necessary, pens, pencils, paper, files with reference items that you've collected, notes you've saved or made to support your topic, other reference books, a favorite snack (I confess—I've written an entire book with M&Ms being the reward each time I finished a chapter), beverage of choice, toys, etc. Your space. Claim it and let others know that when you are in your space, it’s a “Do Not Disturb-Author at Work” sanctuary.  Find time. Some authors have to work specific hours; others are more loosey-goosey. I’m a binge writer—if someone told me that I had to write/work from the hours of 8 to noon every day—my response would be, “Fat chance.” I’m one of those intensives—when I start, it’s like a train … keep going until it gets to the next station—rarely do I start a chapter without finishing it in a first draft format—bathroom breaks are allowed and fresh tea, but that’s just about it. And my spot usually has to have water around it–oceans, lakes, streams, ponds… water that I can see and hear. It’s my muse.

2  The Second Step  Just do it … even if what you get down looks like gibberish. It’s a start. You can’t move forward to publication until you've got some words. So dump them out. The more you organize them, the better it is when it comes to the first dump. The general topic, sub-topics, stories/facts/stats to support the topic all go into magic piles.Where you choose to “dump” is your choice. Some still write all by hand … if you having been procrastinating or dragging your feet—best to bypass this method and either pick up a speaking program like Dragon’s Naturally Speaking where you can literally put on a headset with a mic and start talking. Your works get transcribed to your computer, and then you clean up spellings and missed words after your dictation is done. Easy, very easy. Or, if you can pound it out on the computer, each document is a major theme/chapter and you start pulling it together in bits and chunks. It won’t be perfect … it’s a START

3  The Third Step  Get help … this is where a book shepherd or book coach can come into play. You will need an editor. All authors need editors who edit (this is not your friend or sister, although they can be readers) … all authors no exceptions. Do you have a book in you? Most likely, yes. Could a book help your professional career? No question. Don’t do it cheaply–what does that say about you and the quality of your work? It’s a new year … changes are everywhere. Get professional help–meaning interior designers, REAL cover designers, book shepherding, editing. Your book can do amazing things … you need to bring the  amazing you to the party and invite the pros in for the journey.

Caution: be careful and very wary of what I call the Publishing Predators. Please read the blog that references them and the class action lawsuit posted against a few.  The blog that was loaded with
17 Gems for Authors –newbies and advanced is a must read as well.

Be a Book Bug … Not a Bug Carrier!

Hubby John and I travel lots for business. Okay, sometimes a little pleasure. Some of it is on a cruise ship where I’m either writing or doing a workshop for authors–like the PublishingAtSea.com cruise that Joan Stewart, Amy Collins, Georgia McCabe and I completed last month. A total of 24 of us attended … here’s a shot of a few that we managed to gather at dinner at one time. And we were on Royal Caribbean–none of us caught a bug–any bug.

The recent outbreak on Royal Caribbean and the response of the line: providing all guests a 50 percent refund of their cruise fares and an additional 50 percent future cruise credit. It’s also reimbursing airline change fees and accommodations for guests who had to change plans for traveling home–is smart. Most will be back again. Royal Caribbean has been a line that we have enjoyed dozen of times, including transatlantic cruises.

How do you avoid “bugs”? Wash your hands. Lots. Sanitize what you can in unfamiliar places. Carry wipes and if you are concerned about closed areas (I've gotten sick from many a close by bug carrying person on a plane), consider carrying and wearing a mask when you are in a confined space with strangers. Don’t touch stuff and things–like overhead bins, arm rests, door knobs, even magazines in the back pockets–there are breeders of bugs. I have two pilots in my family–both warn against this. If you have been sick in the past week, or feel “something” coming on, please–stay away from others.

For 30 years, I made my living as a speaker. Sometimes, my speaking on the books I had published had me in a dozen different states in one month. We had a written rule in our office: No one was allowed to come to work with a cold or anything else that could be contagious. Period, no exceptions. I had too many that depended on my voice and wellness, including my family. Bugs were not welcomed.

When John and I cruise, we always have a balcony room and keep the balcony door open when we can–and use it. The sea, the air, the sunshine is what we come for–not the crowds at the pools. I have started and finished many a manuscript on my balcony.

And, we carry Charcoal pills with us–a tip I picked on a cruise from Brazil where I picked up food poisoning–the ship’s doctor came to my cabin, loaded me up, and I was good to go in a short period of time. Charcoal pills, you ask? Mainly used for poisonings and overdoses of other medications–they absorb toxins–charcoal has the ability to bind together certain gases and toxins so they cannot disperse through the blood stream. This slows the progression of poison through the body and eases the upset belly.

With that said, if you are using other meds, check with your doctor to make sure that if you do take charcoal pills, that they won’t interfere with what you are taking.

As an author, you will most likely be on the road at times. You need to be well–and when you have a crowded room celebrating you as a speaker and as an author, there are bound to be some bugs lurking. No, you can’t sanitize someone who is hacking, coughing or sneezing … but you can distance yourself if they are.

All travel today requires that you be smart. You may be attentive to hygiene and on bug alert–many are not.

Authoring Is a Business

As an author, do you think of yourself as just the author? And wear only the author hat … most likely, you would rather be writing.

Or, do you think of yourself as an author … and a business owner—the business owner of all things authoring? Or, if appropriate, as the business owner of a small publishing company? Meaning that once your book is written, and in production, you put your author hat down and become the business strategist and operator.

The first product of your new business is the book you authored. What are your plans for marketing it? For positioning? How are you going to get the word out that your business as created an excellent product? What expenses do you need to underwrite for your marketing needs? Are you going to do all the work, hire someone to work in your office or outsource your needs? Who do you need to partner with spread the
word? What individuals do you need in your circle to offer guidance? What about spin-offs or re-purposing the book into other products.

The creation of your book is seeded by Passion. Your Vision becomes the driver to get it moving. Your Commitment factor is what keeps it and you going. This is where your business hat is crucial. Today’s author must be involved with the running of the business—the CEO. From that point, you identify your departments or divisions, such as: sales and marketing, finance, operations, research & development.

Publishing isn't for sissies. It takes work. Learning the components of publishing and how to think as a publisher is critical to any books success. Yes, it would be so much easier if all you had to worry about and deal with is being the author. Today’s author needs to think that “I’m a business” and businesses need a plan. What’s yours?
